“Pony” Rides
Have a child with you who wants to ride a horse, but is too young? He or she might be able to go on a pony ride with us! Younger cowpokes (5 or under) can go on a “pony ride” at our corrals. They’ll be on the back of a saddled horse and one of you responsible adults can lead them around our corrals area, complete with picture-perfect views of those gorgeous red cliffs. A guide will be present with you and can even walk beside your child to make sure the lil’ one stays safely aboard.
*please note that these rides are not always available; please check in advance to ensure booking.

If your child is 5 or under, they might be able to experience a similar ride to their older brothers and sisters. While the older crew is out riding, you can walk alongside your child, mounted on one of our fantastic kid horses, around our corrals area under the watchful eye of a present guide. There are several options for day rides. Right from our barn under the gorgeous red rock cliffs of the Velvet Ridge we take people out on 1-hour and 2-hour rides. These trails cross the Fremont River and lazily wind under the cliffs, offering spectacular views and the possibility of seeing local fauna such as golden eagles, red foxes, and the ubiquitous rabbits.
One Hour Ride
On-location.Want to try riding but aren’t sure? This short ride is a great way to give it a try within the comfort of our own corrals. Warning: a 1 hour ride goes quickly, it might be over about the time you get comfortable and are hitting your stride with your mount.

Absolutely no prior experience is necessary; in fact, we specialize in beginners. Our guides give a brief yet thorough instruction just before introducing you to your horse and starting the ride. We take people from 6 to 106 on our rides, provided they are physically able to ride. We may let the younger cowpokes ride a horse on a lead rope (led by the guide) if they are unable to control their own horse. (Really little buckaroos can go on a “pony ride” at our corrals. They’ll be on the back of a saddled horse and a parent can lead them around our corrals area, complete with picture-perfect views of those gorgeous red cliffs. Aquarius Alpine Animals
Aquarius Plateau Adventure: Animals & Alpine
This all-day 4×4 excursion showcases some of the best views in all of southern Utah! You will wind across the eastern flank of Boulder Mountain along the spectacular American Scenic Byway 12, one of the 10 Most Beautiful Drives in the country. This amazing drive traverses from sandstone desert views to high alpine meadows. Crossing the famous Hell’s Backbone Bridge is an exciting (and safe) adventure in itself. Keep an eye out for possible glimpses of antelope, eagles, and some of the 800 lakes on Boulder Mountain. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
*For an additional $50/person, this can be a custom-made trip. Different departure times can be arranged for photography-specific tours or to make this a private trip.

Starting bright and early at our retail shop, conveniently located at the junction of Highways 12 & 24 in Torrey, you and your guide will set out. As you curve over the flank of Boulder Mountain, to your east you will see the sublimely beautiful, almost entirely uninhabited rocky canyon and desert landscape sprawled all the way to the Henry Mountains. The Henrys were the last-explored, last-mapped, and last-named mountains in the lower 48 states. As you head south along Highway 12, you will soon catch a glimpse of the immense grandeur of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, which encompasses nearly 2 million acres of remote, rugged, and spectacular scenery. This austere landscape is home to unexpected waterfalls, desert denizens ranging from lizards to jackrabbits to golden eagles, and gorgeous sandstone formations right alongside the road. Shortly past the town of Boulder (the last town in the U.S. to receive its mail by mule train, which it did until the 1940s), you will turn off the paved road and begin your off-road experience. The Hell’s Backbone Road is aptly named, snaking as it does over a narrow bridge spanning a sheer chasm below! As you head deeper into the wilderness you also gain elevation on Boulder Mountain. Threading through tall pine trees, the cooler air circulates and the views never stop. Boulder Mountain, often referred to by locals as the Boulder Top, is itself a level plateau that stretches 12 miles in diameter and 10,000 to11,000 feet high. (The road you will be traveling on doesn’t go quite that high.) It is also part of the Aquarius Plateau—the highest timbered plateau in North America. This is big country, home to 183 species of forest-dwelling birds and mammals! You might catch a glimpse of pronghorn antelope (which might race your vehicle), peregrine falcons, bald eagles, mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, and over 800 lakes and ponds. Prairie dogs, once almost driven to extinction, now thrive on the lower slopes. Your route will drop down in elevation on the Aquarius Plateau northwest of the Boulder Top. Winding through sagebrush, cheat grass, and stands of pinyon and juniper trees, you will soon arrive back on the paved Highway 24 and return to our store in the late afternoon or early evening. Join us for this spectacular journey. Lunch is included.
Cathedral Valley 4×4 Tour
Cathedral Valley Loop
This amazing loop drive, 60 miles of which is off-road, takes you deep into the remote northern backcountry of Capitol Reef National Park. On the way you will travel through the Fremont River Gorge Canyon, which iconic Western writer Edward Abbey termed the most stunning one in Capitol Reef. This trip highlights the striking Cathedral Valley, so named because of the similarities original visitors found between the sandstone monuments and old cathedrals in Europe.
*For an additional $50 per person, this can be a custom-made trip. Different departure times can be arranged for photography-specific tours or to make this a private tour.

Our guides have traveled this high clearance, 4-wheel-drive, two-track road many times and have plenty of navigation experience as well as knowledge of the most interesting sights to point out. First thing in the morning, you meet your guide at our retail shop in Torrey, conveniently located at the junction of highways 24 and 12. On the way, you will pass the National Park system’s oldest orchard (dating from Mormon pioneer days), historic structures including a school and a settler cabin, and some of the most awe-inspiring natural features in Capitol Reef. You will then turn onto the dirt Cathedral Valley road for a drive that showcases sandstone rock spires and towering natural monuments. The vistas along this route include views of Thousand Lake Mountain, Boulder Mountain, and the Henry Mountains, which were the last-explored, last-mapped, and last-named mountains in the lower 48. Lunch on this trip will be at a stop overlooking the Cathedral Valley, a perfect picture-taking site. There is the additional option of stretching your legs for a brief stroll either at this lunch stop or around the base of the two most well-known features in Cathedral Valley, Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon. After lunch you continue on through the Hartnet Draw across the Bentonite Hills through Blue Valley. A memorable ending to the trip is when you cross the Fremont River at the River Ford! These trips usually return to the office between 4 and 5 PM.
Burr Trail 4×4 Tour
The Burr Trail winds through the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument. It is lined with classic southern Utah canyons, graceful cottonwood trees, and a rustler history. You will pass through Capitol Reef National Park on this route, which is part of the 100-mile long monocline called the Waterpocket Fold, an abrupt thousand-foot ridge made out of twisted sandstone. This region makes an ideal playground and feast for the eyes!

This area holds some of the most varied and interesting terrain in Utah. You will then head south down Notom Road, which starts paved but soon becomes dirt. This road runs all the way down to Lake Powell, but you will turn right well before then and ascend up the Burr Trail Road. Right at the top of the Burr Trail switchbacks you will stop to stretch your legs and eat lunch. When you start your journey again, you will pass through the tiny town of Boulder, the last place in the continental U.S. to still receive its mail by mule train—through the 1940s. From there, you will be shuttled over Boulder Mountain along one of America’s most spectacular highways, Highway 12. Verdant Boulder Mountain, the highest timbered plateau in North America, is covered by lakes and streams interspersed amongst high mountain meadows and light, airy aspen groves. Boulder Top, as it is referred to by the locals, features stellar views of Capitol Reef, the Henry Mountains, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and the Book Cliffs over 100 miles away! You will return to our store between 4 and 5 pm. Lunch is included on this trip.

Displaying some of the best classic scenery of southern Utah, a 4×4 tour into the Grand Staircase-Escalante area is sure to leave you with breathtaking visual memories.

Escalante 4×4 Tour First thing in the morning, you will meet at our retail shop in Torrey, conveniently located at the junction of highways 24 and 12. From there, you will be shuttled over Boulder Mountain in our vehicle accompanied by your knowledgeable local guide, who will tell you a bit about the area’s history and stop at overlooks along one of America’s most spectacular highways, Highway 12. As you descend the other side, you will pass through the tiny town of Boulder, the last place in the continental U.S. to still receive its mail by mule train—through the 1940s. You will then head west toward the town of Escalante and the remote, off-road Hole-in-the-Rock Road, which twists through the heart of the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument. This is truly a 4×4 experience. The austere, beautiful desert views are immense and striking in their varied formations. Fifty-Mile Mountain runs alongside for much of Hole-in-the-Rock Road, and the vistas are open all the way toward the Henry Mountains to the northeast. Scientists such as geologists, paleontologists, archaeologists, historians, and biologists have all been afforded great opportunities for new research in this wind-shaped region, and you will understand why as you look around. The multicolored cliffs, plateaus, mesas, buttes, pinnacles, and canyons you will see along this drive are stunning! Options for this tour include stopping to hike Calf Creek Canyon, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in southern Utah. This is a 5-mile round-trip hike that features ancient Native American ruins and pictographs, abundant flora, and towering sandstone cliff walls along the whole route. This trail follows the creek the entire way and is shaded in spots. The falls are a great lunch destination. An alternate choice is to stop at the junction of the Escalante River and Highway 12. This is another magnificent area that features a hiking trail along the river as well as a well-hidden scramble to some ancient petroglyphs. It is an excellent, cool place to stop and eat lunch on a hot summer’s day. If continuing all the way to Hole-in-the-Rock Road, there are three possible stops there as well. One is to view dinosaur tracks preserved in the rocks for millions of years, baked under the Utah sun. Another is explore Spooky Slot Canyon, an amazing adventure into a very narrow canyon created by eons of water action shaping the very rock. A third great lunch stop along Hole-in-the-Rock is at Devil’s Garden, a natural “garden” of sandstone formations that will entice the imagination and provide a fun natural playground for kids of all ages. No matter which option best suits you, our 4×4 tour into the desert canyons and plateaus of Grand Staircase-Escalante presents some of the most classically breathtaking scenery to be found in all of southern Utah.

Capitol Reef Four-Day Epic Pack Trip
Join us on a horseback riding adventure through the desert canyons and slickrock vistas of Capitol Reef National Park. We will explore hidden waterfalls, ancient Fremont Indian rock art, and amazing little side canyons rarely seen. Enjoy cowboy tall tales around the campfire at night and delicious Dutch oven meals under the canopy of canyon country starlight.
Please call for reservation.

During the cool spring and fall months, we will warm up amongst the Sleeping Rainbow in the colorful desert red rock canyons of Capitol Reef National Park. Here we will take in the impressive views of the “Little Grand Canyon,” where eons of water and wind have carved tirelessly into the rock creating convoluted sandstone pathways. The rim of the canyons can extend nearly 500 feet above the floor of the rim, creating cool narrows that offer relief from the desert heat. Be sure your camera is loaded for viewing ancient rock art, American Indian dwellings, and extraordinary slot canyons. ITINERARY Day One: Your adventure begins at Backcountry Outfitters’ headquarters in Torrey, Utah. We will pack for the trip and shuttle to the trailhead with our expert horses in tow. The journey today is a full day ride, having lunch and site seeing on the way. Be prepared for stream crossings and stunning views. Our remote desert trail head ensures that you will probably not see another soul around. We will arrive at our deluxe camp, where we will enjoy a hearty camp dinner. The camp is comprised of old-fashioned canvas wall tents; each one has cots, pads, pillows, wood stove and sleeping gear. The heart of the camp is the cook tent, with a giant stove and oven, and ample room to gather, not to mention the fresh baked goodies. The cook tent is “the place to be” in tent city. The camp has all the amenities one would never expect in the backcountry, including a hot shower and a toilet. Come stay with us and we will show you what camping has been missing all these years! Day Two: Wake up to great cowboy coffee and a skillet breakfast, as we prepare to continue on our adventure. We will explore the country offerings throughout the day, whether it be ancient Anasazi artifacts or fascinating views of rainbow-embedded red rock canyons as far as the eye can see. Take pictures and short hikes discovering land unlike any other. We will return to our comfortable camp to stretch our legs and enjoy a Dutch oven dinner and some great backcountry storytelling around the campfire. Day Three: Ride hard and long with us today. We will break for lunch and, of course, for the amazing hidden treasures of the land that only the best guides know where to look. Cozy up in camp tonight for re-fueling and relaxation. Today might be a good time to experience the luxury of a hot shower available right in camp. Option: We can also spike camp out on this trip. That would mean instead of returning to camp we take pack horses with grub and sleeping gear and spend a night out…. And we mean way out. We would return to base camp via a loop route the next day. By taking this option we are able to explore further into the backcountry than a day ride allows, however we leave behind some of the plush accommodations the base camp offers. Day Four: Giddy-Up! It is time to wrap up your extraordinary adventure. We will ride out of the wilderness on this leg of the trip where our shuttle will be waiting for us, but not before making sure you have had a breakfast and lunch that will guarantee you will remember us. We will take you back to our meeting place and there we will say our goodbyes. **Note: Backcountry Outfitters reserves the right to relocate the destination of the journey depending on weather and flood threats. Alpine Five-Day Epic Pack Trip
Have you ever wanted to be a cowboy/girl? Have you ever thought about exploring mountaintops from the back of the horse? Do you want to fall asleep under a canopy of summer stars and awake to hot coffee? If you answered yes, then this is the trip for you. Our Alpine 5-Day Epic Pack Trip affords you the opportunity to explore our gorgeous, remote mountain region from the back of a horse. We provide deluxe camps, gourmet meals, and stories around the campfire.

The Capitol Reef National Park area holds some of the most varied and interesting terrain in Utah. Part of the 100 mile long Water Pocket Fold, an abrupt thousand-foot high ridge made out of twisted sandstone, this region makes an ideal playground. The adjacent Boulder Mountain provides the elevation necessary to offer respite from the mid-summer heat and creates a cool air mass that results in more rain than surrounding areas during summer months. Traveling high up into the mountains in this region was, for the early settlers, often done on horseback. Today, we enjoy the same benefit of this timeless form of exploration on these versatile animals. Saddle up with us, and do it the cowboy way! This ride is truly for the serious adventurer. On this pack trip adventure we will ascend the verdant Boulder Mountain where lakes and streams are interspersed amongst high mountain meadows and light, airy aspen groves. Once on top, we will explore the gently undulating terrain of the Boulder Mountain (the highest timbered plateau in North America). Boulder Top, as it is referred to by the locals, features stellar views of Capitol Reef, the Henry Mountains, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and the Book Cliffs over 100 miles away! The option to extend your adventure with an extra day of fishing, biking, hiking, or horse riding make this the perfect adventure experience. ITINERARY Day One: Your adventure begins at Backcountry Outfitters’ headquarters in Torrey, Utah. We will pack for the trip and shuttle to the trailhead with our expert horses in tow. The journey today is a full day ride, having lunch and sight-seeing on the way. Be prepared for stream crossings and stunning views. As you wind your way up the mountain, keep a sharp lookout for birds of prey among the aspens and pines.
