Horse Pack Trips

For the early settlers, travel into the labyrinth of the Canyonlands Region was often on horseback. Today we enjoy the same benefit of this timeless form of exploration on these versatile animals. To enhance your experience we take you out in small groups to some of our favorite places on trail systems that have existed for centuries.

Our experienced guides offer their insight and expertise on geology, archeology, and local history. We offer a variety of trips from hourly to overnight pack trips. We accept riders from ages six to 106 provided they are physically able to ride. We may let the little buckaroo ride a horse on a lead rope (led by the guide) if they are unable to control their own trusty steed.

The Capitol Reef National Park area holds some of the most varied and interesting terrain in Utah. Part of the 100 mile long monocline called the Waterpocket Fold, an abrupt thousand-foot ridge made out of twisted sandstone, this region makes an ideal playground. The adjacent Boulder Mountain provides the elevation necessary to offer respite from the mid-summer heat and creates a cool air mass that results in more rain than surrounding areas during summer months. The extra moisture ensures great fishing all summer long. During the warm summer months, we will ascend the verdant Boulder Mountain where lakes and streams are interspersed amongst high mountain meadows and light, airy aspen groves. Once on top, we will explore the gently undulating terrain of the Boulder Mountain (actually more of a plateau). Boulder Top, as it is referred to by the locals, features stellar views of Capitol Reef, the Henry Mountains, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and the Book Cliffs over 100 miles away! The option to extend your adventure with an extra day of fishing, biking, hiking, or horse riding makes this the perfect adventure experience. During the cool spring and fall months, we will warm up amongst the Sleeping Rainbow in the colorful desert red rock canyons of Capitol Reef, San Rafael Swell, or the Escalante Grand Staircase. Here we will take in the impressive views of the “Little Grand Canyon” where eons of water and wind have carved tirelessly into the rock creating convoluted sandstone pathways. The rim of the canyons can extend nearly 500 feet above the floor of the rim creating cool narrows that offer relief from the desert heat. Be sure the camera is loaded for viewing ancient rock art, American Indian dwellings, and extraordinary slot canyons. ITINERARY ……………………. Day One: Meet your guide and pack your gear. We will shuttle to the trailhead with our expert horses in tow. Your adventure begins here with a full day ride either ascending into camp onto Boulder Mountain overlooking Capitol Reef National Park beneath us, or descending into the warm depths of the canyon lands below. Along the way to our deluxe camp, there will be ample exploring and beautiful views for the photographer. We will stop for a picnic lunch before arriving into camp. Once we reach our destination, there will be plenty of time to wet a line or take a leisurely hike before a hearty camp dinner, including the Dutch oven and all the accoutrements. Day Two: Rise and shine to fish and play, then arrive back at camp to a big cowboy skillet breakfast. Ride and discover the area while leaving camp on different trails, again stopping for lunch, and disembark back to Torrey in the afternoon.    Make the Most of Your Adventure Day 3—Optional Extension: -Guided Mountain Bike Ride -Day of Guided Fishing -Extra day of Horse Riding -Guided ATV trip or 4x4 Tour -Canyoneering in the Slot Canyons What’s Included -expert leadership -camping arrangements including camp meals, guides, and camping equipment -all meals and non-alcoholic beverages -group ground transportation to and from headquarters The next step Ready to go?
